iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 chargers?
The iPhone 5 charger is smaller as you can see from the picture below.
The pin out and the housing shape is different but more importantly the video bandwidth that can be piped thru the lightning connector is 4x that of the its 30 pin predecessor. This is a major change to the charger when you compare the two charges. Note that the 8 pins is also reversible, unlike the 30-pin connector which you can see the picture below. Backward compatibility was designed into the design when they changed over in 2012.
